The first wave of fashion dolls was released later that year and consisted of six characters: Frankie Stein, Draculaura, Clawdeen Wolf, Cleo de Nile, Lagoona Blue, and Ghoulia Yelps. Each doll came with its own unique outfit and accessories inspired by horror movies and TV shows.

The dolls were an instant hit with teenagers, who loved the unique designs and characters. Within months of its release, Monster High had become one of Mattel's most successful toy lines. In 2011, the first Monster High Direct-to-Video (DTV) movie was released. Entitled "Monster High: Welcome to Monster High," the DTV served as an origin story for the main characters.
